What does it mean to be a psychologist in the 21st century?

Elena Buran

By definition, a psychologist is one who works with souls using words. Or is the one who describes souls in words - in scripts, fairy tales, games, politics. Also, a psychologist can be one who influences souls, calming, balancing, like a psychotherapist, or motivating, like a coach or trainer. It seems that in all cases we are clearly talking about living souls. But whether this is true in the 21st century, as was previously thought, is something to consider.

Today we learn about the work of psychologists from various sources. These are books and scientific publications, articles and personal blogs, films. And also these are university courses, additional education, the work of school and student psychologists, various projects in different industries with the participation of psychologists. It seems that psychology is as vast as life itself. For example, the other day I watched a scene in a fantasy-comedy from 2023 where a cognitive psychologist tried to convince students that nightmares are not related to reality. And the psychologist, a woman who looked rather strange, completely failed. Her work seemed superficial, naive, stupid, as can be shown in a comedy. But this led me to think that psychologists today are doing something other than harmonizing the state of the souls. Although, of course, there are psychologists who are engaged precisely in restoring healthy harmony in the clients.

On the other hand, the 21st century is marked by new keywords in human speech, these words are Artificial Intelligence. It looks interesting whether psychologists are taking part in the development of artificial intelligence. It seems that psychologists would look like suicide if they took part in the creation of something that is opposed to a living and healthy human soul. On the other hand, some developers of artificial intelligence are already beginning to understand that if they do not take into account the knowledge of the human soul, living intelligence for the development of artificial intelligence, then they are making a useless and even dangerous tool for humans. In fact, if artificial intelligence does not take into account the characteristics and types of living intelligence to help it, then it is a really useless and meaningless tool that constantly makes mistakes in understanding people. And this could create a serious problem for humanity.

What could be the solution to such a problem? Throughout the bloody twentieth century and early twenty-first century, scores of psychologists, psychophysiologists, psychophysicists, and neuroscientists performed important work, often at the risk of their lives. They clearly showed that there is every reason to believe that there is no and cannot be one dominant type of intelligence. Do the creators of artificial intelligence take this into account? Rather, not. Moreover, in living intelligence there are laid the foundations for the development of at least 4 types of intelligence (by number of the functions of consciousness at least), which naturally complement each other and switch among themselves, participating in a single life cycle of society. For example, in a family, a rational man and an intuitive woman complement and protect each other from mistakes. In company management - a rational SEO, an intuitive R&D director, an emotional-practical operational manager, an ethical HR manager - work as a team, complementing each other and distributing responsibilities. These combinational models of governance were developed, by the way, starting from Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, where rational dictators were elected to control only during periods of military danger, and the rest of the time society was managed by more creative individuals, this is well known to historians. Combinations may be different. It is important to understand that one type of intelligence cannot perform a full range of roles with a full variety of competencies.

In addition, the type of intelligence is defined not only by functions of consciousness, it is also behavioral attitudes, and there are also 4 of them. The combination of functions of consciousness and behavioral attitudes give very interesting profiles. For example, an intuitively searching researcher in a duet with an emotional-charismatic seller, taking into account traditions, rules and laws of society, - is a great team when they are friends. There are other great combinations. Such people use different verbal formulas to express themselves, and for them there cannot be the same type of artificial intelligence as an assistant for all occasions. All the characteristics mentioned are well described and well understood by all bona fide psychologists in the world. And if the developers of artificial intelligence had consulted with them, they would have avoided many intellectual mistakes that in the 20th century led people to the bloodiest wars in history, and in the 21st century can provoke the same thing at the level of intelligence - which, in fact, is already shows symptoms.

It can be added that the level of personal passionary energy gives different manifestations of intelligence in terms of power. A lot of energy means either devastating contradictions or powerful creative integration - choose for yourself what you like best - everywhere from the management of corporations and states, the families of CEOs, investors, ministers, to small companies and families of doctors, police officers, marketers, judges, etc. Everyone is equally susceptible to stress and mental disorders, the rich and influential - even more than the poor, even popular TV series have been filmed about this. All this is the scope of application of psychological knowledge.

So, today a psychologist is involved in the life of every living soul, as well as in communication between living souls and artificial intelligence. The roles and competencies that fit harmoniously or contradictorily into management scenarios and models can be better explored and refined, taking into account the experience accumulated in psychology over the past 70 years. Perhaps it is not worth taking the survival test for a second time, which the world had to endure in the twentieth century. Intelligence errors are costly.
