Topic: Soft Skills vs Hard Skills in Tech Careers
Part 1: Introduction & Interview (4–5 minutes)
Topic: Learning and Career Skills
Examiner: What skills are most important for students today?
Candidate: I think both academic knowledge and personal skills are important. Students need to learn how to study and understand technical subjects, but they also need communication, time management, and teamwork skills to succeed in real-life situations.
Examiner: Do you prefer learning practical skills or theoretical knowledge?
Candidate: I prefer a mix of both. Theoretical knowledge helps me understand how things work, but practical skills allow me to apply what I’ve learned. In tech, for example, it’s important to understand concepts, but also to know how to code or use digital tools in real projects.
Examiner: Have you ever had to work in a team to complete something?
Candidate: Yes, in school projects and during online courses. I’ve worked in teams to build presentations and complete tech assignments. I learned that communication and listening are just as important as technical work.
Part 2: Long Turn (3–4 minutes, soft skills vs hard skills IELTS )
Task: Describe a situation where soft skills were more important than technical knowledge. You should say:
What the situation was
What soft skills were needed
Why these skills were more important at that moment
Candidate: I’d like to describe a group project I did during an online course in digital business.
We had to create a proposal for an e-commerce website. Everyone in the group had different skills—one person was good at web design, another knew SEO, and I worked on automation tools. At first, we struggled to agree on the main concept. Some people wanted to focus on fashion, others on eco-products.
At that point, soft skills became more important than hard skills. We needed to listen to each other, respect different ideas, and find a way to make a decision as a team. I helped by suggesting a vote and creating a clear task list so everyone felt included.
In the end, the website turned out well, but what I remember most is how important communication, leadership, and emotional intelligence were. Technical knowledge alone wouldn’t have helped us succeed without collaboration.
Part 3: Discussion (4–5 minutes)
Topic: Skills for the Future Workplace
Examiner: What are the main differences between soft skills and hard skills?
Candidate: Hard skills are specific and measurable, like programming, using software, or understanding data analysis. Soft skills are more about how we interact with others—like communication, adaptability, and creativity. Both are important, but they serve different purposes.
Examiner: Why are soft skills becoming more important in technology careers?
Candidate: Because tech professionals often work in multicultural teams, communicate with clients, or manage projects. It’s not enough to just know how to code—you need to explain your ideas clearly, solve problems creatively, and work well with others. Also, with AI and automation growing, human-centered skills like empathy and leadership will matter even more.
Examiner: How can schools help students develop both types of skills?
Candidate: Schools can combine theory with practical teamwork activities, like group projects, presentations, or tech competitions. Teachers can also include reflection and feedback, so students learn from their experience. Internships and real-world challenges are great for developing both technical and interpersonal skills at the same time.
