Tips on how to behave in the Montenegrin hypermarket

Updated: Nov 26

  1. Always greet the cashier: "Good day! How are you?" - a smiling cashier often means faster service.

  2. Say "thank you" more often than usual: Montenegrins value politeness. Saying "thank you" after every interaction works wonders.

  3. Don't rush when choosing products: While you browse the shelves, keep in mind that it's not uncommon for someone to join you and offer advice, even if you didn't ask for it.

  4. Ask for recommendations: "What is your favourite cheese?" - this not only helps with your choice but can also lead to interesting conversations.

  5. Be prepared for long conversations: If you happen to meet an acquaintance, be ready for a longer chat. Exchanging a few sentences can last up to 15 minutes!

  6. Respect the queue at the checkout: If you notice someone switching from one queue to another, don't get upset – it's a local sport in which everyone participates.

  7. Accept compliments with a smile: If someone compliments your choice of wine or fruit, respond with: "Thank you, I hope it's as good as it looks!"

  8. If you can't find something, just ask: "Excuse me, where can I find the olive oil?" – Montenegrin supermarkets can be real labyrinths, but the staff is always ready to help.

  9. Be ready for spontaneous tastings: Sometimes you'll be offered to try a new product. Don't hesitate to accept and thank them: "This is great, thank you!"

  10. Enjoy shopping: At the end of the day, shopping in the supermarket can be more than just a routine – it's an opportunity to socialize and enjoy the local way of life.

  1. "Hello! I’m looking for some meat scraps for my dog. Can you help me?"

  2. "Do you have any meat scraps or trimmings available?"

  3. "What types of meat scraps do you have today?"

  4. "Are these scraps fresh and safe for dogs?"

  5. "Can you recommend which type would be best for my dog?"

  6. "How much should I buy for a week’s supply?"

  7. "Thank you very much! How much do I owe you?"
